IT Chapter 2 (Double Bill) – Or how fake blood business is booming!

“Swear to me swear to me that if it isn’t dead you’ll all come back.”

I was terribly excited to see the release of IT Chapter 2. So excited that last night, from 7PM until 1AM (about 5.5h) I sat down in a very comfortable chair watching the IMAX release of IT Chapter 2 preceded by IT Chapter 1.

Seeing these two movies back to back did offer some advantages – as I could see the stuff that they used in the frequent flashbacks in Chapter 2 were there in Chapter 1 and some stuff they added in or changed the dialogue to make it more coherent.

The outcome? Chapter 1 was still amazing, Chapter 2 was funny and freaky and absolutely wild. But not as good as Chapter 1. Just a 9/10 instead of a solid 10.

PS: There’s an appearance by Stephen King acting as a Derry town antiques salesperson and he absolutely rips off Bill Denborough when he tries to buy back his Silver bike. I had to laugh a little 🙂

I also laughed when not one but four different people tell Bill that his book was awesome but he had an awful ending and nobody liked that ( 😉 )

The horror is class A but the fact that it’s absolutely peppered with humour makes it easier to watch. How scared would you be if you saw a saggy tits grandma, absolutely butt naked, going from one side of the screen to the other in a hoppity fashion? And the way she froze in her smile – I was laughing throughout.

There are some other laughable scares – the creepy baby head cicada and the one-winged bats coming out of a fortune cookie? The body stashed in the fridge in a weird position that belonged to Stanley mimicking the terrifying scene from Chapter 1 when IT Comes out and untwists. I also had to laugh at the leper tongue kissing Eddie’s mom while she was strapped to a medical chair in the basement of their chemist!

There are some absolutely terrifying scenes too – the scene with the girl at the baseball game and the one with the kid in the hall of mirrors – both raised my hair up. I think it’s mostly because you have inhumane violence directed towards innocent children that makes people react so violently.

And there is blood (they actually won an award for most blood . And guts. And a Pomeranian. And gay beatings (they were in the book too). And jump scares (with or without a clown).

The ending massively differs from the 1980’s version and thankfully it also differs from the book! No teen sex 🙂 but there is some kissing!

PS: They’ve cast Jay Ryan into the role of grown up Ben and they couldn’t have made a better choice. When I was watching the 80’s version of IT Chapter 2 I was like… really? This is what you could come up with for Ben?

The other casting choices were spot on and I had to stop and think that somebody actually had to go and find lookalikes for the famous actors in the children’s section or maybe they had to study the mannerisms too. Eddie was perfect and Ben too!

Bill Hader in particular steals the show. He is given some great one-liners to work with, much the same as Finn Wolfhard was, and he nails every one of them.

It was so entertaining I didn’t even realize the run-time was 2 hours and 49 minutes

In conclusion: Kudos to the producers, the actors and the screenwriters. They stayed true to the story, the idea behind it that friendship conquers all and they gave us a pretty decent ending.

“Maybe there aren’t any such things as good friends or bad friends – maybe there are just friends, people who stand by you when you’re hurt and who help you feel not so lonely. Maybe they’re always worth being scared for, and hoping for, and living for. Maybe worth dying for too, if that’s what has to be. No good friends. No bad friends. Only people you want, need to be with; people who build their houses in your heart.”
