BlacKkKlansman or how I was blown away by a movie I didn’t expect

So there’s a new movie at the cinema and because I’ve stopped watching trailers that usually give away 90% of the plot, I went in as you say “blind”. The only thing I had to go by was the poster.

I was expecting a horror or maybe a comedy but what I got was 2h and 15min of a social documentary about racism in America in the 70s. The film is set after the Vietnam war when there was an outcry from the black communities about equal rights and a rise to power of extremists in both ends of the spectrum: Black Panthers and KKK – who have now re-marketed themselves as an organisation with a joining fee and initiation rituals.
The story follows Ron Stallworth who joins the police force and infiltrates the ranks of KKK in Colorado Springs in the late 1970s.

This is Ron with his bestseller book. After the investigation into the Klan was closed, Stallworth kept it a secret and told no one about his role in it. He transferred to the Utah Department of Public Safety, where he worked as an investigator for nearly 20 years, and retired in 2005.

Stallworth noticed a wanted ad in the local paper seeking members to start a new chapter of the Ku Klux Klan in Colorado Springs. Stallworth called the phone number listed, and posed as a racist white man who “hated blacks, Jews, Mexicans, Asians.” During the conversation, he learned that the man founding the new chapter was a soldier at nearby Fort Carson. Stallworth arranged to meet the man at a local bar and sent a white undercover narcotics officer, wired to record any conversations, to stand in for him at the meeting.
I was surprised to see Adam Driver nail the role and had to laugh a few times at the attempts of acting like a black man posing as a white man.

The movie absolutely rocked. From overt racism, loads of n* words being sprayed at the viewer and a close-up on how a white supremacist lives and thinks (I mean the villain of the movie thought the Holocaust never happened!).

Flip Zimmerman: What kind of stuff do you guys do?
Klansman: Cross burnings, marches, this is fixing to be a big year for us.

I love how they depicted hate, ignorance and fear – the three elements that make a bigot. They were complaining about black people getting equal rights and saying what will be next? Gays? I think if you took a time machine and transported one of those rednecks to today’s time frame, they would probably have a heart attack.

Blackkklansman really shows the Klan for what they really are, and highlights the good work of an amazing african-american police officer. The supporting cast does a great job here, Topher Grace as David Duke was an insanely good performance and I can imagine how hard it would be to embody that particular character and Laura Harrier plays off of Washington beautifully.

Ron Stallworth: Hello, this is Ron Stallworth calling. Who am I speaking with?
David Duke: This is David Duke.
Ron Stallworth: The Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan, that David Duke?
David Duke: The last time I checked. What can I do you for?
Ron Stallworth: Well, since you asked, I hate blacks, I hate Jews. Mexicans and Irish. Italians and Chinese. But my mouth to God’s ears, I really hate those black rats, and anyone else really that doesn’t have pure white Aryan blood running through their veins.
David Duke: I’m happy to be talking to a true white American.
Ron Stallworth: God bless white America.

I have never had a cinema experience quite like this, for instance at the tail end of the film, in the space of 10 minutes the entire audience in my screening went from laughing and some perfectly executed comedic dialogue to utter still silence in absolute awe, frozen & horrified by what was appearing on screen, this silence went on for a few moment even after the fade to black and an applause started up.

PS: I was waiting to hear about Trump at the end as they were saying through the movie “Make America White Again” and my wish came true when Trump gave a speech at the end..
