Ayashi no Ceres – Anime

If you like stories about mutants, split personalities, conspiracies involving multinational research companies, aliens, genes and clones, you will love Ayashi no Ceres.

Alternative titles : Mysterious Ceres , Unearthly Ceres , Ceres Celestial Legend

Ayashi no ceres is the story of Aya Mikage and her twin brother Aki, driven apart by the forces of fate. On their sixteenth birthday, Aya and Aki are called to the family home to be given a special present. What they thought was a birthday party, however, was really a test–one which Aya failed. She was found to possess the reincarnated spirit of an ageless tennyo, one bent on the recovery of her hagoromo and the destruction of the Mikage family. Aya quickly found herself separated from her beloved brother, and hunted by her own family.

Whenever she is in danger, Aya transforms into Ceres – a mature woman with a set of strong powers – sexy as hell if you ask me. She changes back into Aya either when she is kissed or when she reluctantly releases control over the teen’s body in order to help out.
Ayashi no Ceres is based loosely on the Japanese legend of the “Tennyo no Hagoromo.” In the legend, a young man is returning home from work and spies a few women bathing nearby. On closer inspection, he discovers that every woman is actually a tennyo (celestial maiden). He is about to leave when he spots a hagoromo (robe worn by the tennyo) lying nearby, so he foolishly takes it home with him. Soon after he leaves, the tennyo comes for her hagoromo, finding that it is missing. Upon her discovery, the tennyo is distraught, knowing that she is unable to return to heaven without her robe. Instead, she is forced to stay on Earth and marry the man, and bear his children. Many years later, she is finally able to discover where the man hid her hagoromo, and as she leaves for heaven, she swears vengeance against her husband for enchaining her on Earth.
The series is a maelstrom of adventure and fantasy, as Aya struggles to keep the tennyo, Ceres, from surfacing inside of her while wishing that the things in her life could return to what it used to be; happiness, a loving family, everyday life at school, and especially the companionship of her brother Aki.

She is hunted down by family to have her genes harvested for cloning, her brother turns into a murdering psychopath and the man with the task of protecting her turns out to be a paid hand and also her new lover. Betrayal, teen pregnancy and teary reunion are soon to follow.

There are fourteen volumes in all in the manga, so the story has time to become really complex (but not like Pirates of the Carribean 3-I-have-no-idea-what-is-going-on-complex). It’s a long series, but it’s worth the time (and money if you buy all the volumes like me).
